The Science, Culture and the Law Centre will host its annual lecture on 22 June 2015. For the occasion, Pr Lionel Bently will deliver an evening lecture on the question of IP law and innovation. The eminent IP scholar offers a summary of this talk :
"In 2014 the Max Planck Institute for Intellectual Property and Competition Law - probably the leading European research institute focussed on "intellectual property", changed its name to the "Max Planck Institute for Innovation and Competition". In 2007, when Sir Hugh Laddie founded an IP research institute at University College, London, it was names the "Institute of Brand and Innovation Law". Reflecting on these changes in nomenclature, this paper asks whether "intellectual property"
is giving way as the paradigmatic structure that defines a field of research and being replaced by "innovation", why there is such a level of discomfort with the concept of "IP", and what might be at stake in such a shift in framing from "IP" to "innovation".
